The El Chorro Lake District
Up the fertile Guadalhorce valley, just beyond the village of El Chorro, is one of the geographical wonders of Andalusia. The Gargante del Chorro is an immense chasm, 180 metres (590 feet) deep and in places only 10 metres (30 feet) wide, cut by the river through a limestone mountain. From the village, for a trough sense of the gorge's dizzying dimensions, take the Camino del Rey, a cat walk clinging to the rock face and leading to a bridge across the gorge. There are three stunningly beautiful turquoise coloured lakes bordered by pine forests, this is Malaga’s “Lake District”. There are in fact three artificial lakes created by a dam built across the dramatic 200 m high Guadalhorce river gorge, known as the Gargante del Chorro. Watch out for the eagles that continually circle around the sheer cliffs. Here are a few photographic impressions:
